What Qualifies As Junk?

Are you holding onto something because you don’t think it’s donation worthy and you’re just not sure what to do with it? That’s something I hear a lot when I’m helping a client downsize! “Can I even donate this?” Meanwhile, it’s been sitting in the back of the garage for years. The million dollar question is, “Is it still valuable to you or is it causing you stress?”

Let’s dive into this so it’s easier to make those tough decisions, not so tough.

OUTDATED ITEMS
An example of an outdated item is a cell phone from 2005. It might not be broken but you haven’t turned it on in over 10 years. Or maybe it’s not extremely old, but it can’t be fixed and it’s unusable.

RUINED ITEMS
If it’s been sitting in the shed, garage, or attic for a long period of time and it’s been ruined by humidity or animals - it’s junk. Save yourself the load of laundry, very old mildew damage is often permanent!

EXPENSIVE REPAIR
Does it cost more to repair it than the item is worth? Unless it’s a very special item to you personally and you will ACTUALLY get it repaired, it’s junk.

BROKEN ITEMS
If you’ve been holding onto an item with the best intentions to fix it, yet it’s sat for years, it’s junk. If you still like it and it can’t be fixed, it’s junk.

NOBODY WILL TAKE IT
If you’ve driven it to a donation center, consignment shop, put it on the curb, and offered it online for FREE… and still nobody will take it, it’s junk! If it’s too big to move yourself and nobody is willing to pick it up for free, it’s junk!

Now that we’ve determined what is junk, what can you do with it? In the Harrisburg/Lancaster/York area, we’re fortunate to have several local junk removal companies.
