Spring Organizing Checklist

I know everyone raves about spring cleaning, but I’m here to argue that spring organizing is even more important. After a long winter cooped up inside, with dark evenings that reduce energy to put stuff away, and a holiday season filled with acquiring way too stuff… spring is the perfect time to declutter and tidy up for a warm season of hosting events.

Get your entryway in check.

Time to pack up hats, gloves, scarves, and winter coats. Good-bye bulk - hello lite spring-ware! I always suggest that my clients invest in plastic bins (weather locked if needed for your storage area) to help preserve your items between seasons. Cardboard and thin plastic bags can be easily accessed by critters and fluctuating temperatures.

Explore new options you may need for hooks and baskets to simplify your daily routine? What would have made the entryway neater over the winter? A small backset for mail and keys? Each family member having their own cubby?

Scan the entire house for last season’s decorations.

You may have tossed the Christmas tree months ago, but are there any lingering trinkets that need to be put in the attic with the bulk of the decorations? It may only be two or three items, but overtime these little things add to overwhelm or end up getting tossed in the trash out of frustration (and wasting money!). Now is the perfect time to completely switch out winter decorations to a refreshing spring look.

Properly store last seasons memorabilia.

Are you someone who saves every holiday card you received? That’s okay, but you have to keep them organized! How about kid’s holiday art projects? Yep, those can be stored simply and well without causing stress in your life. File boxes like this are my go to for storing all paper items and it helps me downsize as needed. I also love using shorter bins in homes that require underbed storage.

Swap seasonal clothing.

Depending on how many clothes you have and your space, you might not have to store anything. Even if you don’t pack away winter clothes, this is still a great time to re-organize your closet and prioritize the items you’ll wear the most through spring and summer. Keeping less in your closet regularly cuts back on visual overwhelm and makes it easier to pick an outfit without sifting through clothes you wouldn’t wear this season.

Donate anything you didn’t wear over winter.

You might love it on the hanger, but if you didn’t wear it for the last year+, it’s time to say goodbye. Letting go of items that are still in good condition can be challenging, so you have to keep in mind that regardless of condition the item is no longer serving you. Gifting to friends or a local charity can make downsizing your closet a more enjoyable process.

Cleaning supplies & utilities.

If not done regularly, use this time as your annual reminder to get new sponges, loofas, cleaning brushes, and laundry utilities. Toss the old, crusty supplies, and create an organized system with a new and clean look.
